200 students in Lagos for National Schools’ Rackets Games

More than 200 students from 13 schools across the country have converged in Lagos for the maiden National Schools’ Rackets Games which opened on Monday at National Stadium, Surulere.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the week long competition, which will end on Saturday, was organised by Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF).

NSSF President, Olabisi Joseph, said at the opening that the competition would focus on Badminton and Table Tennis.

“Not every child is interested in football; the fact that it is the most popular sport doesn’t mean we can’t build the interests of these children in other sports.

“Our focus is on Badminton and Table Tennis; when you play these games, it helps improve the mental alertness of the players; its important we groom them so we can replace aging athletes.

“By so doing, we take them off the streets, will build a better Nigeria,” she said.

NAN reports that participants at the championships will compete in U-15 Badminton boys and girls singles, U-17 boys and girls singles, as well as doubles.

Other categories are Table Tennis are U-13 boys and girls singles and the U -15 boys and girls singles and doubles.

NAN reports that 21 states registered for the championships, out of which 12 made it to the opening, while others are expected to join in the games.

Some of the participating states are Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi State, Bayelsa, Rivers, Kastina State, Kano State, Jigawa, Borno, Abuja and Lagos State. (NAN)
