No fewer than 2,000 veterinary doctors within and outside the country are expected in Benin for the 57th Annual Conference of the Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA).

The National President of the Association, Dr Ibrahim Shehu, who disclosed this in a press conference in Benin on Sunday, said that the conference would hold between Oct. 25 and Oct. 29.

He noted that the number of the participating doctors was low in comparison with the over 10,000 registered members of the body due to the COVID-19 protocol.

He stated that aside the participating doctors, about 500 exhibitors would be expected to showcase their products during the convention.

Shehu said that the  convention with the theme: “The Veterinarian and Global Health Security” would be used to address salient issues concerning the profession.

He said that some renowned researchers and scholars such as Prof. Dennis Agbonlahor, former Vice Chancellor of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, would deliver a paper at the convention.

The NVMA national president stressed that one of the key issues of the veterinary profession was not being given due recognition.

“The government needs to know that there is no longer boundary between animal doctors and the human doctors. This is what is now obtainable across the globe.

“In this convention, there will be scientific session to be taken by experts coming from across the globe to educate us on the worth of a veterinary doctor; which the government needs to take into consideration in the public health policy formulation.

“A veterinary doctor is trained in various aspects of health management and it will also interest you to know that most of the diseases plaguing the world today are from animals.

“We know that if these diseases are controlled at animal level, humans will not contact these diseases,”  Shehu said.(NAN)
