Residents of Mbayion Community and surrounding areas in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue, have commended Gov. Hyacinth Alia for embarking on flood relief projects in the area.
The community members gave the commendation during an inspection tour of projects executed by the Governor, to mark his administration’s two years in office.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the tour was led by a former Minister of Information, Labaran Maku and a former Director-General of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr Mike Omeri.
The community members described the road and bridge projects in the area as major relief from years of flooding and poor infrastructure that had left them isolated, especially during the rainy season.
Dr Emmanuel Kor, a community leader, recounted the difficulties faced by residents before the intervention.
“Last year around this time, we couldn’t cross this area due to flooding. Students, worshippers, and small children were all trapped.
“We lost some students to flood while they were trying to cross over to attend school.
“Today, we are grateful to Gov. Alia for coming to our aid,” he said
Kor also appealed to the government to consider extending the drainage system to further mitigate flooding in the area.
Similarly, Rev. Fr. Inenger Emmanuel of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tsaradi, lauded the state government for addressing the community’s longstanding need.
“I once met the governor during an ordination and told him about the suffering caused by the collapsed bridge.
“He promised, not just to construct the bridge, but also to tar the road. Today, that promise is being fulfilled.
“Our governor is working, not only for us here, but for the entire state. He has truly proven himself as a leader committed to grassroots development,” the clergy said.
Mrs Christina Moji, a resident, expressed appreciation for the government’s response after years of neglect.
“For many years, we were cut off. Going to the market, church, or school was a nightmare. But today, the community is coming alive again,” she said.
Shakwa-anwando Happiness, Head Girl of Global Academy School, said the project had eased access to education for pupils and students.
“It was very difficult to reach school before, but since the construction began, we can now cross without stress. We thank Gov. Alia for this,” she said.
Mrs Hembadoon Nongo, Acting Director of Engineering Services in the Office of the Governor, provided technical details of the project.
She said the bridge and culverts had completely cut off the community before the intervention.
She noted that the road clearing had been completed, and asphalt overlay was ongoing.
“When completed, the project will significantly boost economic and social activities.
“The market, church, and schools in the area will all benefit from improved access,” Nongo added. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
