The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako, has inaugurated 16 projects at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital (FNPH), Kware, Sokoto State.
Speaking at the event on Wednesday, Salako said the projects were part of the strategic vision and the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He said Tinubu was focusing on empowering the nation’s health institutions with all they required.
Salako listed them to include physical infrastructure, human resources, better funding and other forms of support so that such hospitals can better serve Nigerians.
He said, “It is commendable that the management of FNPH Kware has made judicious use of the allocated resources and I am happy to see that more than 16 projects were completed.
“These projects included: Molecular Laboratory, Intensive Care Unit, Regional Women and Children Drug Dependency Treatment Centre and an Accident and Emergency Centre.
“Others are: Multipurpose Students’ Hostel, School of Post Basic Nursing (Psychiatry), Information, a Communication Technology (ICT) Centre, Hall and alternative power supply, among others.
“These projects without any doubt will positively impact care and result in better outcomes for patients who visit this hospital.”
The minister added that the Federal Government had provided more than 500 key infrastructural projects and advanced modern equipment to various federal tertiary health institutions across the country.
According to him, the government had also recognised that physical infrastructure alone cannot provide healthcare, adding, “it had, therefore, also instituted a robust employment mechanism leading to the employment of over 15,000 health workers in a year.
“It also ensures continuous professional training for our health workers and through the Nigeria Digital in Health Initiative, it is increasing the digitisation of service provision to increase efficiency, transparency, quality of care and stewardship”.
The minister further explained that to address the challenge of power in the health institutions, the government was implementing an alternative power mechanism to take advantage of renewable sources of energy like solar.
Salako said, “The Federal Government plans to convene a National Dialogue on Power in the Health Sector to provide a better framework for the deployment of alternative power and drive more investments to power the health sector.
“Government has approved a Social Action Fund to empower 109 communities across the country to implement community-owned health promoting projects as a strategy to address some of the social determinants of health.
“We are also in the process of implementing ‘The Renewed Hope Health Connect’, an interventional fully funded healthcare service targeting one million vulnerable Nigerians with medical, surgical, ophthalmological and audiology care.”
He further highlighted that the ministry had already started the implementation of the Nigerian National Mental Health Act, 2023 with the creation of a mental health desk in the ministry and was working towards the creation of a full department.
“We are integrating mental healthcare into primary health care services and also working to decriminalise suicide, eliminate stigmatisation and regulate involuntary seclusion,” he disclosed.
The Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, Dr Faruku Wurno, said the state government was partnering with the FNPH Kware on healthcare care delivery in the state.
He stressed that the present integrated healthcare system incorporated in the hospital would broaden the collaborations.
Wurno commended the Medical Director, Prof. Shehu Sale, for his visionary stewardship and urged his successor to sustain the developmental roadmap started in the hospital for the benefit of the people.
In his remark, Bishop Hassan Kukah of Sokoto Diocese, described the giant strides in the hospital as a welcome development.
Kukah urged heads of health institutions to always promote inclusiveness and spearhead initiatives that would ease people’s sufferings, enhance peoples’ well-being and adequately cater to the healthcare needs of the citizens.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, who was represented by the District Head of Kware, Alhaji Muhammadu Dan’iya, commended Sale for his developmental foresight, confirming that the people had benefited from the programmes and services he had initiated.
In his address, Sale said the hospital was transformed to deliver its mandates of healthcare service delivery, training and research, having competent manpower and the required equipment.
Sale said the hospital was first to run a Nursing and Midwifery School along with Post Basic Psychiatric Nursing programmes as well as train consultants in the field of Psychiatry.
He commended Tinubu for his efforts to transform the healthcare system in the country to be efficient, effective, accessible, affordable, people-centred, qualitative and timely. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
