The Moroccan Police said on Sunday that they seized 5.45 tons of cannabis in the northern city of Nador during a routine security control.
The banned substance was concealed in 165 packages inside a car, which was intercepted by the Police during a routine security control on Saturday evening in the city, according to a police statement.
The passengers of the car managed to escape and an investigation into the alleged drug trafficking case has been opened.
Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis cultivation during the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world’s largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.
Moroccan security services seized 179,657 kg of cannabis in 2019, according to official statistics. (Xinhua/NAN)
