Facebook in Germany on Tuesday promised to take steps to crack down on groups that break the platform’s rules.
This including limiting their reach across the site and placing restrictions on individuals and communities.
The announcement is seen as offering reassurance that nefarious activity and the spread of misinformation in the forums would be quashed in the lead-up to Germany’s national elections on Sept. 26, although the election was not specifically mentioned.
“The more violations a group or a member commits, the stricter our restrictions become until we remove the group or the member from our platform entirely,” Facebook said.
The announcement was made in a blog post on Facebook’s German website, and is in line with promises the company has already made elsewhere.
Users who repeatedly violate policies in a group could temporarily lose the authorisation to post or comment in all groups.
In addition, the user will not be able to invite anyone into groups or create new groups.
If rule violations accumulate in a group as a whole, there will also be consequences the company said. (dpa/NAN)
