A sociopolitical group, the South/East Heritage Foundation, said it would support the democratic process by shopping, projecting and campaigning for credible candidates during elections.
Chief Kenneth Uzoigwe, President of the Foundation, said this during a solidarity visit to the Executive Chairman of Surulere Local Government Area, Hon. Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf, on Monday in Lagos.
Uzoigwe explained that the South/East Heritage Foundation was a non-partisan and non-profit oriented organisation.
“We are the people of Southern and Eastern region of Nigeria. We came together under the umbrella of South/East Heritage Foundation in order to have one voice with which to advance our course.
“It is in our cultural spirit of integration and communal-driven relationship that we come together in distant lands.
“Even though we are apolitical yet we are not indifferent to political activities and how we are governed,” he said.
He added that the organisation was ready to shop for credible candidates, project them, campaign for them as well as vote for them and defend their votes.
“That is why South/East Heritage Foundation took over the streets of Surulere on July 17, in a rally to support the candidacy of Hon. Suleiman Bamidele Yusuf. The rally attracted South/East people of different backgrounds.
“The support was massive and the outcome of the election was our testimonial for the strenght of the rally, which kept all roads in Surulere in festive mood for more than six hours,” he said.
Uzoigwe also said the solidarity visit was also to handover souvenirs to the Chairman of Surulere Local Government.
He said: “Feel free to call on us whenever you have the need to do so. We request also that you carry us along in your government and programmes.”
On his part, Yusuf acknowledged the support given to him during his campaign by the foundation.
Yusuf also promised to integrate South-East and South-South in his administration as he commended Uzoigwe for his philanthropic gesture and promised to work with the foundation going forward. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
