By Bosede Olufunmi

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has prosecuted 440 traffic offenders in the past three months in Kano State, the Sector Commander, Mr Zubairu Mato, said on Wednesday in Kano.

Mato disclosed that those prosecuted were part of 8,969 traffic offenders were arrested by the Corps personnel in the past three months in the state.

“The most prevalent offences are about driver’s licence, overloading and violation of speed limit, among others.”

He also said the Corps had conducted COVID-19 sensitisation activities to create awareness on the need for drivers and motorists to comply with COVID-19 protocols to stem a further spread of the pandemic.

“We engaged drivers and transport owners’ unions to promote adherence to COVID-19 safety guidelines in parks and terminuses.

“Through this, we also encouraged the use of face masks, hand sanitisers, the washing of hands and social distancing by drivers and passengers,” Mato said.

He disclosed further that the FRSC intended to re-train personnel in the area of patrol activities and on how to be fair and firm to people.

“We will also train and mobilise youths along crash-prone routes, who have indicated their desire to give timely assistance to accident victims,” Mato added.

He also stated that the FRSC has adopted proactive measures to reduce traffic crash by 50 per cent and the fatality rate by 20 per cent in the state.

Mato said the Corps would liaise with construction firms working on the Kano-Zaria and Kano-Bauchi Roads to embark on repairing existing potholes to reduce the number of accidents.

“Construction firms such as Julius Berger, as well as Dantata and Sawoe, have done a lot by filling some potholes,” he said.

The Sector Commander then advised motorists to observe traffic regulations to ensure safety on the roads.
