The German Green Party leadership is to propose a candidate to succeed Chancellor Angela Merkel in upcoming elections on April 19, party manager Michael Kellner said on Wednesday.
The party board is to announce who of its two co-chairs – Annalena Baerbock or Robert Habeck – is to lead the Greens into the federal elections on September 26, according to a document from Kellner seen by dpa.
The candidate is then to be officially confirmed at a party summit between June 11 and 13.
The Green Party has been on the rise, according to recent public opinion polls, landing just slightly behind Merkel’s conservative Christian Democrats.(dpa/NAN)
