Group urges Nigerian youths to embrace agriculture

By Ikenna Osuoha

An Abuja-based NGO, Initiative for Leadership Development and Change (ILDC) says diversifying the nation’s economy into mechanised farming will create the right environment for massive youths’ empowerment and wealth creation.

Chief Ugochukwu Nnam, the National Coordinator of the group, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.

Nnam said that Nigerian youths should learn to emulate popular musician, Innocent Idibia, a.k.a, Tu Baba who had embraced mechanised agriculture.

He said agriculture was key to achieving food sufficiency and financial independence in any society as shown by the Malaysia and Singapore examples.

He said that the easiest way for any country to overcome the present global economic recession was to diversify its economy into agriculture.

He added that “I must commend Tuface Idibia for setting example. I have always called on our youths to do same instead of waiting for white collar jobs that most times never come.

“Let us go back to basics; since the price of oil is dropping everyday, it is time to do as our founding fathers did in the 60s when the naira was competing with pounds,” he said.

The coordinator expressed confidence in the Nigerian economy through concerted efforts of  youths.

He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for encouraging agriculture, saying it was the only way to eliminate dependence on importation of food.

According to him, any country that cannot feed itself is finished because food is not just necessary but inevitable for all to live.
