IHSD: NGO drums support for Nigeria’s unity in diversity

An NGO, Save Our Heritage Initiative says  strengthening Nigeria’s unity in diversity is key to harnessing the country’s economic gains.

An Abuja-based Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), Save Our Heritage Initiative (SOHI) says  strengthening Nigeria’s unity in diversity is key to harnessing the country’s economic gains for wealth and job creation.

Ms May Ikokwu, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the organisation  said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja on the occasion of International Human Solidarity Day (IHSD).

The UN International Human Solidarity Day (IHSD) is marked on Dec. 20, every year to celebrate global unity and solidarity in diversity

Ikokwu, also Secretary General, Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria (COSROPIN), urged Nigerians and the world to close ranks irrespective of tribal, cultural, religious or racial differences for greater and blissful goals.

She said that unity was critical in advancing economic and political stability as well as consolidating on past successes with the aim of making progress.

“Today is a day for us to celebrate those things that unite us more than those things that divide us.

“A day of reflection, a day of evaluation of our past and opportunity to forget and forgive the past injuries, but focus on the future as indivisible people,” she said.

Ikokwu called on government at all levels to show commitment to the people especially in the provision quality healthcare.

According to her, the major drive of the day is to show solidarity to all the marginalised or vulnerable people as well as reminding government of their commitment.

She emphasised the need for global and national debate for poverty eradication in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

She said that her organisation would continue to drive cultural cohesion among communities for national unity.

Ikokwu, while congratulating  Nigerians on their solidarity for one another, said unity in diversity was paramount to restoring her position as giant of Africa.

She, however, called on Nigerians to be more patriotic by supporting government’s good policies for a prosperous and peaceful nation. (NAN)
