Gov. Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun has commended the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) for exemplifying responsible journalism and playing a leading role in the country’s media industry.
The governor gave the commendation on Tuesday when the management of NAN led by the Managing Director, Mr Buki Ponle, paid a courtesy visit to him in his official residence in Abuja.
Oyetola said that NAN in over four decades of its operations had maintained core professionalism, objectivity and ethical journalism such that it is held in high esteem by many end-users of its numerous products and services.
He urged the management to sustain the tempo and continue with the dreams of the founding fathers of the agency in the face of a fast-changing media environment.
The governor, who also congratulated the managing director over his appointment, described him as a committed and thoroughbred journalist who he had known for several years.
“I have known NAN as a credible media organisation for years. It has been a source of credible information not only to Nigerians but to all development partners around the world.
“Your operations don’t only cover Federal Government affairs but also include state and local governments across the country.
”I urge you to continue to do what you are doing in line with the dreams of the founding fathers of your agency,” he said.
On the recent appointment of the managing director, Oyetola said: “I must congratulate the Managing Director over his appointment.
”This is someone I have known for years as a committed and thoroughbred journalist and I have no doubt in his ability to take the agency to the next level.”
Earlier in his remarks, Ponle had commended the governor over his achievements, especially in the area of infrastructure development.
He listed agriculture, health, infrastructure development, education and cultural tourism as some of the sectors where the Oyetola administration had excelled.
The managing director also used the opportunity to extend an invitation to the governor to attend the Sept. 16 programme for the renaming of the NAN headquarters building after late Wada Maida, a onetime Managing Director and former Chairman of Board of Directors.
He also expressed the agency’s readiness to promote ongoing development projects of the state to national and international audiences.
“We extend an invitation to you to honour the formal renaming of the Abuja headquarters of NAN after our former Managing Director and Chairman of the board.
”He will be immortalised on Sept.16 as approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Though we are an agency with limited resources, we do our work so effectively and creditably that our subscribers don’t have to doubt our products.
“We have what it takes to project the historical and cultural values of Osun just like we did during the recent Osun Osogbo Cultural Festival.
“NAN registered its operations in Osun in 1978 and as a development agency, we will continue to contribute our quota to its development through responsible journalism and accurate information dissemination,” he said.(NAN)
