Simon Nkom, the North-West representative on the board of Nigeria Hockey Federation (NHF), on Thursday in Abuja emerged as the federation’s new President, promising to continue his predecessor’s good works.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nkom was voted in unopposed and he polled the maximum 11 votes to emerge the President.
Sani Kutigi from the North-Central zone was also voted in unopposed as the new Vice-President after polling the maximum 11 votes.
Nkom, after his victory, thanked his board members for the confidence reposed in him, adding that his goal was to continue with the good foundation laid by his predecessor.
“I want to thank my fellow board members for deeming it fit to elect me as the president of the NHF.
“The best part of my life has always been sports, particularly hockey, and the fact is that I have the passion for the game. So, you should expect nothing but a continuation of my predecessor’s legacy.
“I use the word continuation, because I was a Vice-President in the outgoing board which was ably presided over by Sen. Abdul Ningi who deemed it fit to come around and give us all the support today.
“Looking at the support we have, it is obvious that we have no choice but to succeed,” he said.
Nkom added that he and his board members would work hard to give the federation the needed support, stating that government cannot alone do the job of running sports.
“We intend to support government in our own little way and look out for other means to be able to further develop the game.
“Today is not the time for long speeches as we intend to go to work right away and ensure that our work speaks for itself.
“My board members and I are fully qualified for the task ahead and we are going to work hard as a team to ensure that we make meaningful progress,” he stated.
Nkom also reminded sports journalists of the responsibility to give the board the necessary support, understand its challenges and advise it appropriately for Nigerian hockey to move to the next level.
“All hands must be on deck to ensure that we take our rightful position, both at the continent and internationally,”he said.(NAN)
