Commemoration

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday spoke by phone to commemorate the end of World War II in Europe and the continent’s liberation from Nazism.

According to the Kremlin, Putin and Merkel emphasised the importance of preserving the historical memory of the war’s tragedies and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining constructive ties.

The two leaders thought of the millions of victims and the immeasurable suffering caused by the war unleashed by Nazi Germany.

This Victory Day, marked in Germany on Friday and Russia on Saturday, is the 75th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s cessation of military activities in 1945.

The Kremlin added that Putin and Merkel expressed confidence that both countries would never forget about the German patriots who selflessly fought against the Nazi regime.(dpa/NAN)
