The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) began the distribution of relief items to 18,644 households affected by the 2022 floods in Edo on Wednesday.
Other beneficiaries were vulnerable persons in the state.
The beneficiaries are part of the 660,884 households verified nationwide and targeted under the 2023 Special National Economic and Livelihood Emergency Intervention programme of the Federal Government.
Assistant Director, Expenditure at NEMA, Mrs Priscilla Agonta, represented NEMA’s Director-General, Mr Mustapha Ahmed, at the start of the distribution of the relief materials.
She said the list of beneficiaries was arrived at after loss and damage assessment in the affected areas.
She added that the intervention was expected to drive the sustainable socio-economic resilience of the targeted, most vulnerable individuals.
“The 2022 flood devastated many communities across the country including in Edo State at Esan Southeast, Etsako Central and Etsako East local government areas.
“Following the flood, search and rescue operations were successfully conducted in several locations where trapped persons were rescued and given necessary care.
“Immediately after the flood, damage and loss assessment were conducted and relief items were approved by the Federal Government to complement initial intervention by state governments,” she said.
Relief materials distributed were food and non-food items, and livelihood equipment such as grinding and sewing machines and farm inputs.
Addressing the exercise, Mrs Helen Obayuwana, Director, Edo State Emergency Management Agency commended the Federal Government for the gesture and urged beneficiaries not to sell the relief materials.
One of the beneficiaries, an elderly Mrs Joy Aigbe said the food items she received would help her in no small measure.
“I thank the government for this. At least, this will help me for like two months.
“As you are aware of the situation in the country today, these food items will provide relief for me and my household,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
