Edo 2024: LP Guber candidate pledges to prioritise skills acquisition in schools
By Collins Yakubu-Hammer
The governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Edo, Prince Humpherey Omorodion, says he will ensure the inclusion of skills acquisition for primary school pupils in the state if elected.
This is contained in a statement signed by Omorodion and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
According to him, he is the best man to lead the state in 2024, assuring that he has a solution to turn all sectors in the state around.
“If elected the next governor of Edo, my administration will revisit the existing curriculum to ensure the inclusion of skills acquisition for primary school pupils.
“The aim is to prepare them early in life to participate in economic activities,” he said.
The governorship hopeful, who is also the chairman of the UK chapter of LP, expressed dissatisfaction with the current Edo government on how it is running education in the state.
He said the Edo government still largely pays attention to certification rather than building capacity of students from primary school.
“Under my government, by the time students are going to secondary schools, they are already equipped with skills that would enable them attain self-reliance during their university days.
“We have paid a lot of attention to paper certification instead of raising the capacity of our children to face the realities of time.
“The truth is that, without skills and capacity, people can hardly contribute significantly in the economic space, because, the so-called white collar jobs are not there anymore.
“So our solution is to ensure that our schools have well-equipped skills acquisition centres so that we can tackle unemployment with solution-driven skills that will serve a purpose.
“By doing that, we will be catching them young, and we will largely make Edo children, who will be able to contribute to our GDP, aim to become employers of labour rather than job-seekers when they leave school,” he said.
He listed some of the skills to include, information and communication technology, computer repairs, catering, furniture making, electrical and electronics engineering and more.
If elected the next governor, Omorodion an emergency health care practitioner, also said his administration would set up specialist schools for talented and gifted citizens of Edo with research centres for industrial and technology era activation.
While underlining that his administration will make the teaching of Edo language compulsory, Omorodion also promised to adequately look into the welfare of teachers and reverse brain drain in Edo educational sector. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
