Maddtimes cartoon magazine institutes ‘Maddman of the year’ award
‘Maddtimes’, a Nigerian cartoon magazine, has announced the institution of the ‘Maddman of the Year’ award.
A statement by Mr Joseph Edgar, publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the magazine, explained that the award would go to that Nigerian, male or female, “whose antics, in the year, confounded Nigerians, regaled and left them wondering what that person represents”.
Edgar, generally known as The Duke of Shomolu, observed that certain Nigerians “continue to leave the rest of us in a deep sense of confusion as to what exactly they represent or epitomise as they continue to play whatever roles they have given themselves in society”.
“From politics to entertainment to the economy and, indeed, in our social lives, the ‘Maddman’ touches us in a way that makes us reel in laughter; he leaves us wondering just where or who this person is, or is going to do next.
“Most importantly, such people leave us in amazement; they leave us laughing and wondering as to the very confusing and ridiculous position they have taken in the public space.
“To arrive at the ultimate winner, Nigerians are expected to choose 50 such people through public survey and the Editors will prune it down to 10 after which the public will, through open ballot, vote for the ‘Maddman of the Year’.
“The winner will have his caricature drawn by our very expert caricaturists, framed and then delivered at his doorstep, preferably near the dustbin at his or her front gate in thanks for making Nigerians laugh at their antics.
“Already, nominees have been chosen for the maiden winner. The list of 10 will be announced on Radio on Sunday, 17 Dec., 2023,” the statement said.
Maddtimes is Nigeria’s premier online cartoon magazine. Its main vehicle of delivery is sacarstic caricatures which take a funny look at society, its leaders and people with the aim of passing strong messages.
Specifically, the magazine seeks to lampoon bad leaders and generally use humour to lighten the weight of human existence.
It has pulled together heavyweights in the industry as editors and contributors one of which is Mike Asukwo, whose cartoons continue to elicit national attention.
Asukwo is co-founder and lead caricaturist.
Other contributors are Chidi Nebo, notable satirist and former contributor to The Cartoonist, whose humour-filled write-ups continue to reverberate on social media.
Albert Ohams, believed to be a legend in his own right, who continues to create influence with his work in The Sun Newspapers, is also a founding contributing Editor.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Maddtimes is an online publication that, however, comes out as hard copy (physical format), every quarter. (NAN)
