Abuja, Dec. 14, 2023 (NAN) Dr James Lalu, the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), has charged Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to engage in different sporting activities to boost their mental health.
Lalu gave the advice on Thursday in Abuja, when he received a Bronze Medalist, Charles Akoh, who emerged victorious in the game of Draught during the Federation of Public Service Games (FEPSGA) held in Minna, Niger.
He said the call became necessary to deepen understanding of persons with disabilities in physical activities, to drive the health benefits of the exercise.
“Regular exercise can improve our muscle strength, mental health and can also boost our strength to endure some certain pressure.
“Exercise sends oxygen and nutrients to our tissues and helps the cardiovascular system work more efficiently, and when our hearts and lung function well, we will have more energy to tackle daily chores,” he said.
Lalu said that the active participation of persons with disabilities in sporting activities was key to overcoming their mental stress.
According to him, “You must be active in exercise and sporting activities for good health and mental alertness.”
He congratulated Akoh for his efforts in winning the Bronze medal.
“Your victory is a source of encouragement and a triumph for persons with disabilities across the nation.
“You are not only the representative of the commission but a great Ambassador to all the 35.5 million Nigerians with disabilities.
“You will remain our symbol of pride and accomplishment,” lalu said.
Lalu urged him to sustain the tempo to be a source of encouragement to other members of the disability community across the country.
Earlier, Akoh who is a staff of the Department of Planning, Research and Statistics of the commission, expressed gratitude to the commission for the unwavering support throughout the tournament.
Akoh promised to redouble his efforts towards achieving more heights in the games.
“I will bring home the gold medal in 2024 if properly equipped,” he promised.
