How patriarchy leads to Gender Based Violence- Don
By Fatima Mohammed-Lawal
Prof. Irene Durosaro of the Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, says a society that is patriarchal often suffers from various forms of Gender Based Violence (GBV).
Durosaro stated this in Ilorin while speaking on “Patriarchal Attitudes: Counselling as an Effective Intervention.”
She said women had been marginalised in various ways in spite of their large population.
According to her, resistance to patriarchal control at the household level, especially within conjugal relationships, leads to wife battery, marital rape and acid bath.
She added that women face other harmful traditional practices such as Female Genital Cutting, widowhood rites, disinheritance and deprivation of marital and economic entitlements.
The resources, she said, were such that they promote dependence on the male spouse for financial and material needs.
Durosaro said patriarchal forces want to maintain the status quo and keep women out of the corridors of power to ensure that male privileges accruing from the continued operation of patriarchy were maintained.
“It is a social structure in which they dominate, oppress and exploit women, just like the capitalists bourgeoisie oppress the proletariat that laboured to earn wages.
“Women were taught to accept their position through the socialisation process. They were taught to be Obidient wives and to respect their males,” she said.
According to her, the subordination of women in the country occurs in different dimensions, adding that there are no boundaries that protect them from injustices.
“It is successfully perpetuated through cultural and religious socialisation.
Most girls and women in Nigeria, she said, grow into adulthood believing that the occurrences were natural and divinely ordained.
Durosaro urged all tiers of government to be proactive in assisting women to have equal rights with men.
“Governments should provide scholarships and education grants to female children, while skills acquisition centres should be established for those not intellectually inclined,” she said.
She urged Non Governmental Organisations to assist in breaking the barriers associated with patriarchal attitude and promote the rights of women through legalisation.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
