By Ibironke Ariyo
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has announced that the year 2023 witnessed an unprecedented feat of zero jailbreaks and attacks across all 253 custodial centers nationwide.
Assistant Controller of Corrections (ACC) Mr Abubakar Umar, the NCoS spokesperson, disclosed this remarkable achievement during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.
Umar attributed this success to comprehensive government measures implemented to fortify facility security against potential internal and external threats.
Reflecting on the nation’s history of alarming jailbreaks and attacks, he emphasised the deployment of extensive personnel and advanced technology for intelligence gathering.
Recalling the early announcement in January 2023, Umar highlighted the commitment to a tough stance against perpetrators of jailbreaks.
The NCoS strategically invested in both infrastructural development and security strategies throughout the year, learning from the challenges faced in 2022.
NAN recalls that the noteworthy incident on July 5, 2022, involving the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) at the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, served as a catalyst for heightened security measures.
Overpowering security personnel, ISWAP executed a successful attack leading to the escape of 879 inmates, with more than half subsequently apprehended.
Umar underscored the absence of jail attacks in 2023 as a testament to the robust security measures and the dedicated efforts of security personnel and stakeholders.
He emphasised that this achievement signifies a significant milestone in upholding law and order in the country.
Commenting on the achievement, Umar stated, “Ensuring the safety and security of these facilities is of utmost importance, protecting both inmates and the dedicated staff working tirelessly for order and rehabilitation.”
Acknowledging the role of inmates’ rehabilitation and reintegration, Umar emphasised that a secure custodial system upholds the rule of law and contributes to public safety.
He concluded by recognising the importance of collaboration and intelligence sharing among law enforcement agencies, attributing the positive outcome to the coordinated efforts of various stakeholders, including the Nigerian Police Force and other security agencies. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
