A former President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Peter Esele, has donated bags of rice to 265 vulnerable households in Ohordua community, Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo, to celebrate the Christmas.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that during the distribution, Esele said that he initiated the donation nine years ago to give succour to the poor and vulnerable persons in his community.

Represented by Mr Chris Oribhabor, his Personal Assistant, the veteran trade unionist said that the 2023 distribution was particularly dear to his heart because rice that used to be the commonest food in the country, is no longer affordable.

“So it gladdens my heart that amidst all odds, we are still able to do this again this year.

“We had thought that this year, at least no fewer than 300 households will benefit, but the present economic situation is a shocker to everybody.

”But all hope is not lost, I believe we will come out of this present situation stronger,” he said.

Esele explained that he chose to carry out the exercise every December because of the significance of the yuletide.

“The yuletide is a season to show love, empathy, compassion and brotherliness as it is the period we commemorate the birth of Christ.

“So in commemorating the birth of Christ, it then makes sense that we reach out to the vulnerable amongst us, so that as we wine and dine, they too are doing same.

“This is why we have ensured that against all odds, since the past nine years, on this date, we present at least a 50k bag of rice to the vulnerable households among us,” he added.

Some of the beneficiaries, Mr Lawrence Inogie, Mr John Aluede and Mrs Veronica Okotor, appreciated Esele for putting smiles on their faces and prayed to God to reward him abundantly. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
