Rep. Adamu Tanko (PDP-Niger State) has promised to support efforts to improve education in Suleja Local Government Area of Niger.
Tanko, who represents Suleja/Tafa/Gurara Federal Constituency, said this during a town hall meeting held in Suleja on Saturday.
The lawmaker who is also Chairman, House Committee on Federal Colleges of Education, said he would ensure the establishment of tertiary institutions in Suleja.
Tanko said he had already sponsored a bill for the establishment of higher institutions in the area.
He further said: “Within this period since I assumed this position, I have used my office to facilitate a lot of tuition fees and support for students.
“That is within the ambit of the support we are offering in the given period. Going ahead, we have a coherent policy to support youths and support education.
“We have particular interest in supporting the vulnerable students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“We are going to support indigent students so that we can offer them scholarships.
“The area is lacking in very sensitive areas. So, we are going to support nursing, medicine and other relevant courses for those who perform excellently.”
The lawmaker also said attention would be given to girl-child education in his constituents.
“Provisions have been made in the 2024 budget for instructional materials and a lot of support to schools, targeted at encouraging enrollment of girl education.”
Tanko, who said Suleja had not received the kind of opportunities anticipated given its proximity to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), noted that he would use his position to negotiate for viable projects.
Earlier, the guest speaker at the event, Dr. Awwal Adamu, underscored the need for legislators to embark on constituency projects that had direct benefit to communities.
He spoke on the topic, “Toward a Purposeful and Result-oriented Leadership-The Role of Legislators in Constituency Development.”
Adamu urged legislators to utilise resources at their disposal to develop constituencies rather than for personal purposes.
He decried the lack of a tertiary institutions in Suleja, calling for the need to site a centre of the University of Abuja in the community.
Also speaking, Chairman of the occasion, Muktar Ahmed, said lawmaking and oversight were the two most important functions and responsibilities of lawmakers.
