The Council of Retired Federal Permanent Secretaries (CORFEPS) has pledged to support the rebuilding and repositioning of the nation’s civil service for optimal performance.
The body made the pledge on Tuesday in Abuja at a colloquium with the theme ‘Reflections on Nigeria’s Public Service: Way Forward for Good Governance’, held as part of activities to mark the 2024 CORFEPS Week.
Malam Yayale Ahmed, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of CORFEPS,,said that the body would also deploy its reservoir of knowledge and experience for nation building.
“In line with our motto, `Continuing Patriotic Service’, the vision of the forum is to engage in meaningful discourse on important and relevant issues of national development, including matters pertaining to public service.

“This is one of the aims and objectives of the forum and the council is also committed to draw public attention to matters and maintenance of desirable national living standards and values.

“It is in line with our constitution to carry out periodic assessments of the overall performance of the nation and give constructive advice on public policy issues,” he said.
According to him, the smooth running of the civil service should never be compromised by any government if it wants to deliver on its mandate.
“For this reason, we will not relent in our advocacy on policies to make public service to deliver the good services needed to contribute to national development,” Ahmed added.
Also speaking, Oba Olu Falae, the Olu Ilu-Abo of Akure Kingdom, said rendering service to the nation should not be limited to those in active public service.
“Service is the greatest thing anyone can offer, I am a good Cristian and I believe that service to others is the best,” he said.
Falae, who chaired the opening session, called on both the forum and the federal government to look into the welfare of retired civil servants.
“Not only health is the challenge of retired people but also the pension, we will be glad if CORFEPS can do something about the welfare of the federal permanent secretaries in terms of medical care and others when it is necessary,” he added.
In his remarks, former Interior Minister, Amb. Babagana Kingibe, cautioned retirees to desist from the mentality of exiting totally from contributing to the nation after their active service.
According to him, retired public servants still have greater roles and responsibilities in nation building
Kingibe urged civil servants to shun corruption, and disprove the generally acceptable notion that it was the civil servants who lure political appointees to ways through which to circumvent the system and engage in corruption. (NAN) (www.nanews.ng)
