The Emir of Kaura Namoda in Zamfara, Alhaji Sanusi Ahmad-Asha, has urged collective action to improve girl-child education across the state.
The emir made this appeal on Monday in Kaura Namoda while receiving a delegation from Media and Publicity Consult (MPC), who visited him for advocacy.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the advocacy is part of the ‘Integrated Marketing Communications Campaign (IMCC)’ on harmful social norms affecting girls’ education.
The visit aligns with activities under the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project, currently active in Zamfara.
The emir praised Gov. Dauda Lawal for declaring a state of emergency in the education sector, aiming to drive improvements across all levels.
Ahmad-Asha also commended AGILE for initiating projects that raise awareness and promote positive change regarding girl-child education in the state.
He stressed that education is vital for development, particularly for girls, and requires urgent, united effort from all stakeholders to address prevailing challenges.
“I welcome you for this visit. We are ready to support this project, as it promotes girl-child education.
“Our doors remain open for discussion and cooperation to ensure the success of this initiative for the benefit of our children,” the emir said.
He highlighted insecurity, parental attitudes, and low community involvement as key barriers preventing girls from accessing education in society.
He called on government and well-meaning individuals to prioritise girls’ education, especially in rural communities where access remains limited.
“Government should introduce empowerment schemes with incentives in schools, to provide girls with skills and discourage street hawking,” he advised.
He also appealed for scholarships and rewards for girls, to motivate and encourage them to remain in education.
Earlier, team leader, Prof. Ahmad Liman, described girl-child education as essential for nurturing future mothers and building a better society.
Liman, represented by Malam Nasiru Biyabiki, said the visit aimed to gain support from traditional rulers for the success of the AGILE project.
“We are here for advocacy and also conducted a focus group discussion with other stakeholders at the palace.
“We appreciate the emir’s support, encouragement, and assurances towards the success of this important project,” Biyabiki stated. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
