China champions Global South media cooperation with technological innovation
By Busayo Onijala
Gao Wei, President of China Central Television (CCTV) Video News Agency, on Friday, said that the agency was committed to enhancing media competitiveness and international influence of Global South countries.
Gao spoke during a meeting with journalists selected from those currently on a media exchange programme in Beijing.
He highlighted that nearly 50 of CCTV’s news partners are from countries in the Global South, showcasing the agency’s commitment to fostering stronger international relations.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that CCTV Video News Agency is China’s leading video news agency with over 800 users in more than 170 countries and regions.
Reflecting on recent successes, Gao said that December 2024 recorded the successful launch of the first Global South Media Dialogue, a groundbreaking initiative that explored innovative cooperation in key areas such as Artificial Intelligence, media convergence and cross-platform media integration.
According to him, the agency has launched a multi-language intelligent translation platform and a customised service platform for integrated media.
“Next month, the MediaPix will be launched, which can complete the creation and editing of text, audio, pictures, videos; it is very convenient and helps to increase the efficiency of our work.”
These innovations, he said, were expected to streamline media content creation, editing and distribution, making it more efficient and accessible for partners across the Global South.
Gao said on the basis of existing cooperation, the agency planned to promote establishment of a Global South Media Partnership Mechanism through a multi-dimensional cooperation.
“At present, the world landscape is undergoing profound changes.
“China and the countries of the Global South share a will and a hope in the spirit of working together for global cooperation and a hope to build a platform for news reporting and also to realise the mutual benefit of the cooperation,” he said.
Delivering a speech on behalf of African journalists at the conference, Oluwabusayo Onijala, a Senior Correspondent of NAN, said that with the rapid development of technology and the growing recognition of the importance of diverse voices, there had never been a better time for media collaboration across the Global South.

She said that in a few decades, China had transformed itself from a largely agrarian society into a powerhouse, reshaping its path and influencing the media, global markets, politics, and cultures.
Onijala said by sharing individual experiences, journalists could help one another to better navigate the challenges of journalism in their respective countries.
“Whether it is through joint projects, exchanging knowledge about new media technologies, or simply fostering better understanding of one another’s political landscapes, collaboration is key to building a stronger voice for the Global South,” she said.
Onijala said that what stood out the most about China’s development was its strategic focus on opening up to the world while nurturing its own unique purpose.
According to her, the opening-up policies are intertwined with China’s focus on sustainable development.
“The emphasis on green technology, technological innovation and a more eco-friendly future, as captured in the Government Work Report, is both inspiring and timely.
“This leaves in us a re-awakening that it is not just about rapid economic growth, but also about growth that is mindful of the future of all sectors,” she said.
Speaking for Arab journalists, Faisal Said Alsaadi of Al Roeya Newspaper, Sultanate of Oman, praised China’s early realisation that true development could only be achieved by building partnerships.

He said that China-Arab cooperation emphasised China’s commitment to mutual development, adding that media cooperation had become an important pillar of the relationship.
“The story of China is not merely a development experience to be told but a message of hope and an open invitation to all in the Arab world and Africa,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
