Kicker Football Club of Abuja defeated Gbayi FC of Kabusa, Abuja, 3-1 on Wednesday in a Group C opening match of the ongoing Sixth Edition of the Unity Cup 2025 at the Area 3 Football Pitch, Abuja.

The competition is organised by the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Football Coaches Council.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match got off to a thrilling start as Andrew Yusuf of Gbayi FC scored the opening goal in the 3rd minute of the game.

However, Kicker FC equalised in the 32nd minute through Silas Ubebe’s well-placed shot.

Kehinde Mustapha scored in the 39th minute from a free kick to make 2-1 for Kicker FC.

On resumption from the second half, both teams showed determination, tightening their defence.

Abdullahi Mohammed sealed the win for Kicker FC with a precise shot in the 53rd minute to end the game 3-1.

Speaking after the game, Dare Adesomo, Head Coach of Kicker FC, said it was a good result for his team in the tournament.

“I believe my team has the potential to win convincingly, given the quality of players we have.

“However, we are still in the process of building, working on our weaknesses and hope to come back stronger in our subsequent matches.

“We finished at the semifinals in 2024, and we are determined to go further this time around.

“With five teams in Group C and only two spots available for the next round,” he said.

Kicker FC are in group alongside Gbayi FC, G-Medix FC, Eagle’s Wing Football Academy and Young Professionals FC.

NAN reports that Kicker FC will face G-Medix FC by 12 p.m on Friday at the Area 3 Football Pitch in Abuja.

In another match played at the same venue, Eagle’s Wing Football Academy of Gwarinpa defeated Young Professionals Football Club 2-0.

The goals were scored by Jude Ogbonna in the 65th minute and Job Daniel in the 69th minute.

Rasheed Sadiq, the Head Coach of Eagle’s Wing Football Academy, expressed his appreciation for the organisers.

“It’s a good competition, and it’s encouraging to see the young ones coming up.

“This is our third appearance in this competition. In our debut we finished in the group stage and made it to the quarterfinals in our second appearance.

“I want to encourage my players to maintain their hard work and dedication,” he said.

NAN reports that the defending champions Gwarimpa United FC suffered a 5-3 defeat to Jubril FC on Tuesday in the opening game.

A total of 23 teams are participating in the tournament which commenced on Tuesday to end on June 23. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
