Gatefield, a public strategy and advocacy organisation based in Nigeria, has called for gender-equality in the sport sector.
Ms Shirley Ewang, the Advocacy Lead personnel for Gatefield, said the call followed a new documentary titled “The African Giants” which celebrated the Super Falcons.
She noted that the documentary sparked constructive and vibrant conversations on gender inequality in the sporting sector, hence the need for a call to action.
She added that “the African Giants tells the powerful story of the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s most successful national football team, and the inequities they continue to face despite global successes.

“This new documentary offers unfiltered look into the lives, victories and struggles of the Super Falcons. The film centres on star players — Michelle Alozie, Rasheedat Ajibade and Asisat Oshoala.”

She said that the film captured the players personal reflections and the team’s collective call for fair recognition, equal pay and stronger institutional support.

Ewang said that “the Super Falcons are Africa’s most decorated national football team, yet they continue to battle chronic underfunding, lack of visibility and systemic gender disparities in sport.

“African Giants not only celebrates the team’s legacy but confronts the harsh realities of what it means to represent a country.

“Nigerian women have always shown up, even when the system shows they are not a priority.”

She noted that inclusion and equality must be intentional and prioritised.

She pointed out that the film is part of a broader campaign to raise awareness about the gender gap in different fields, especially sports, and that the aim is to inspire young people, policymakers and the public to rethink what support for women should truly look like. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
