The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) says it has supported more than 50 startup women entrepreneurs to formally register their businesses, open bank accounts, and access advisory services.

Mr Agabaidu Jideani, Director-General of the chamber, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

Jideani said the support was provided during the Women-owned Businesses (WoB) Open Day hosted by ACCI on June 13, which featured participation from key regulatory and financial institutions.

He said the event brought together representatives from the Corporate Affairs Commission, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, Nigeria Export Promotion Council, and various financial institutions.

It is to offer tailored financial literacy and business formalisation support to women entrepreneurs.

“The women supported were from diverse sectors including fashion, food processing, retail, agriculture, manufacturing, and digital trade.

“During the Open Day, they were assisted with registering their businesses, opening bank accounts, and accessing business advisory services,” he said.

Jideani said the initiative aimed to test demand for cost-free business registration, financial services, and development support, and how these combined efforts could lead to business growth.

“The demand for these services among entrepreneurs is very high,” he noted.

He said the initiative was also part of efforts to ensure women’s transformative inclusion in economic reforms and to promote gender equality.

“ACCI is committed to advancing the adoption of a national definition for women-owned businesses and supporting innovative approaches to business formalisation,” he said.

According to him, the Chamber is engaging all levels of government and relevant stakeholders to support women entrepreneurs.

“To sustain this progress, Nigeria’s government, private sector, and civil society must remain engaged and committed,” he said.

“The recognition of women-owned businesses is no longer a question of possibility; it is a matter of political will and institutional follow-through.”

Jideani described the adoption of a national definition for women-owned businesses as a moral, economic, and governance imperative.

“It signals that Nigeria is ready to invest in inclusive growth, where women’s contributions are visible, valued, and verifiable,” he said.

He added that ACCI, in partnership with the Investment Climate Reform (ICR) Facility and other national and international organisations, is demonstrating its commitment to ensuring women entrepreneurs are recognised and supported.

“The momentum must not wane. We will not give up in our efforts. Let every ministry, every agency, and every business chamber take this moment forward,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
