The National Civil Society Council (NCSCN) has appealed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to expedite action on the passage of the Peace Corps of Nigeria Bill.
The Executive Director, NCSCN, Amb. Blessing Akinlosotu, made the appeal on Thursday in Abuja at commemoration of 27th anniversary of Peace Corps of Nigeria.
Akinlosotu commended the corps for being instrumental in providing employment opportunities for Nigerian youths and enhancing security across the country.
“The Peace Corps of Nigeria is celebrating a remarkable milestone today; marking 27 years of dedicated service to promoting peace, security, and national development.
“The bill, which aims to establish the Nigerian Peace Corps as a statutory body, has garnered significant support from lawmakers.
“Its passage will provide the corps with the necessary legal framework to effectively tackle security challenges, promote peace education, and empower Nigerian youths.
“With its mandate to facilitate peace volunteerism, community service, and nation-building, the corps has played a vital role in promoting social cohesion and development.’’
He highlighted the urgent need for statutory backing to enable the Peace Corps to reach its full potential.
According to the executive director, stakeholders are optimistic that the passage of the bill will usher in a new era of peace and development.
Akinlosotu said that with the support of Senate President and other lawmakers, the Peace Corps of Nigeria was poised to making a lasting impact on the country’s security and development landscape.
“As the organisation looks to the future, its commitment to empowering youths and promoting peace will undoubtedly continue to inspire a new generation of Nigerians,’’ he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
