The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has mourned the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing his passing as the loss of a dignified and purposeful leader.
Similarly, Mr Peter Ahemba, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, and the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nasarawa State Chapter, have expressed their condolences over Buhari’s passing.
The family of the late former President Buhari announced his death on Sunday at a clinic in London, England.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Bola Tinubu has dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima to London to escort the remains of the late president back to Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Ladipo Johnson, said the party reflected on the two periods when Buhari led the nation and affirmed his legacy as a modest, disciplined, and patriotic leader.
“President Buhari’s contributions to the country’s development and his steadfast commitment to national unity and discipline will not be forgotten,” the party stated.
“Of course, in a deeper evaluation, the late President Buhari was quite a dignified and purposeful leader.
“We could see that element of purposefulness in him in and out of office and his usual milk of human kindness as a father figure for many.
“He was well loved by his people who treated him as a hero.
“He also exemplified modesty, discipline and many reckon with him as a patriot,” he said.
Johnson said that Buhari would be remembered as a dedicated soldier who served Nigeria as head of state and a “born-again” democrat who did his best as a civilian president.
“We will miss him”, Johnson added.
He commiserated with the family, friends and associates of the late former president, saying history will be kind to him.
On his part, Ahemba described the death of former Buhari as a monumental loss to Nigeria.
Ahemba, speaking in an interview with the NAN on Sunday in Lafia, said the news of Buhari’s passing came as a shock.
“It is with a heavy heart that I extend my heartfelt condolences to the immediate family, friends, and associates of the former president, as well as President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government,” he said.
He noted that Buhari died at a time when his wealth of experience and counsel were most needed, adding that his absence would be deeply felt across the nation.
“As we mourn his departure, we take solace in the fact that he lived a life of purpose and left behind a legacy of service and dedication,” Ahemba added.
He urged the late president’s family and loved ones to accept his passing as an act of God, noting that death is a necessary end for all mankind.
Similarly, Salihu Mohammed-Alkali, Chairman of the Nasarawa State Council of NUJ, described Buhari’s death as shocking and a significant blow to the nation.
“Death is inevitable and everyone must accept what has happened as the will of God,” he said.
Mohammed-Alkali offered condolences to the former president’s family and prayed for the repose of his soul, asking God to grant the bereaved the strength to bear the irreparable loss. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
