President Bola Tinubu has announced the passing of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.
This is contained in a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga on Sunday in Abuja.
”President Buhari died today (Sunday) in London at about 4.30 pm, following a prolonged illness.
”President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs Aishat Buhari, the former President’s widow and offered his deep condolences,” Onanuga said.
He said the President had ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima and his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila to proceed to the UK to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.
Tinubu also ordered flags at half-mast as a mark of respect for the departed leader.
Buhari had been receiving medical treatment in London before his passing, having initially traveled for a routine medical check-up in April.
Former President Buhari was twice elected Nigeria’s President in 2015 and 2019.
He also served as military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
