The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it has rescued no fewer than 17,818 victims of Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) across the country between January and June.
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this during a news briefing at the 2025 half-year strategy session on Thursday in Abuja.
Mohammed said that the essence of the briefing was to evaluate the corps’ progress and to recalibrate its operations for greater impact and outcome.
He also said that the briefing aligned with the objectives of the corps 2025 Half-Year Strategic Session which started on July 23.
He further said that the aim of the strategic session was to review performance and to proffer solutions to some of the prevailing road safety challenges.
The corps marshal revealed that available statistics showed that the first half of 2025 had presented a tough challenge.
“Between January and June 5, 281 road traffic crashes occurred across the country involving 39,793 people. Sadly, 2,838 lives were lost while 17,818 were rescued.
“This represents an increase in crashes by 3.9 per cent and a rise in fatalities by 2.2 per cent.
“The total number of people involved in road crashes within the period under review also increased by 8.9 per cent compared to the same period in 2024,” he said.
He, however, said that they recorded significant strides over the last year, adding that the corps midwifed a Bill to amend the FRSC Establishment Act to empower it for effective traffic management, and strengthening the institutional framework.
According to him, this is to protect personnel and infrastructure as well as enhance staff welfare.
“It is gratifying to inform you that the Bill has been passed on Tuesday, by the House of Representatives and it is now awaiting concurrence by the Senate of the Federal Republic.
“These measures show clearly that management is striving hard to motivate staff and to provide an enabling environment for productivity.”
Mohammed added that the inauguration of the National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS) and the FRSC Mobile App was a major transformation in its operational methods.
“These digital tools have enhanced crash data reporting and improved public engagement.
“It also provided real-time access to critical safety features such as black-spot detection, emergency reporting, drivers’ license and number plate verification, as well as easy access to the National Traffic Radio from anywhere across the globe,” he said.
He acknowledged the continued dedication of the media to the mandate of the FRSC, even in the face of emerging road traffic safety realities and public expectations. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
