Lagos open for business, Sanwo-Olu assures Georgia delegation
By Oluwatope Lawanson
Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reiterated that Lagos State is open for business, emphasising government’s efforts to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
The governor said this during a courtesy call by a delegation from the Georgia House of Assembly, led by Almaz Dagash at the Lagos House, Ikeja.
According to the governor, Lagos has a market with enormous capacity, a population of about 24 million people, and a GDP of about 259 billion dollars.
Sanwo-Olu said that the Federal government is working to change the narrative, stabilise the nation’s currency, and remove subsidies.
The governor noted that for the first time in about 60 years, the country’s new tax reform exempted low-income earners from paying income tax.
“We have the market here, the vibrancy is here, and the capacity that is here is humongous.
“We also have a lot of people with enormous opportunities,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu stated that Lagos is working to liberalise its economy, automate processes, and build a broadband network across the state to ensure access to broadband for public schools and institutions.
He also disclosed that the state has a portal for civic engagement and interaction with the government.
The governor emphasised that despite occupying only 0.4 per cent of Nigeria’s land mass, Lagos housed 10 per cent of the population which is more than the combined population of 12 African countries.
He noted that if Lagos were a country, it would be the sixth-largest economy in Africa after Nigeria, South Africa, Algeria, Morocco and Egypt.
In her remarks, Dagash said the visit was to foster collaboration, train, mentor, and provide access to funds for Lagos state entrepreneurs.
She noted that the diaspora could play a crucial role in mentoring, investing, and opening doors for African entrepreneurs.
According to her, Nigeria was chosen for the visit due to its vast opportunities, highly educated population, and entrepreneurial spirit.
Dagash emphasised that Nigerians have a high achievement drive and made positive impact in their communities and beyond.
“Nigeria has the highest educated population, and very high achievements in everything they do.
“Yes, there are challenges but everywhere you go, you will find that Nigeria is doing extremely well.
“Nigerians make sure that they make a difference, not only on the continent where they come from but even in the community where they live, which is key.
“So, it is very important for the continent to harness the knowledge, the resources, and abilities of the diaspora, because we can mentor and invest,” she said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
