Some stakeholders have stressed the urgent need to redefine leadership, growth, and balance for women in today’s rapidly evolving world.

They spoke at the 2025 Women in Management and Leadership (WIMLEAD) conference held on Wednesday by the Nigerian Institute of Management Chartered (NIM) in Akwa Ibom.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference’s theme was: ‘Empowered to Excel – Redefining Leadership, Growth, and Balance for Women in a Changing World.’

Mrs Nsikak-Abasi Orok, Clerk of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, urged female leaders to embrace mentorship and inclusive workplace systems for sustainable growth.

She highlighted the importance of women driving structural reforms, supporting flexible work policies, and investing in lifelong learning to maintain relevance and competitiveness.

Orok noted that the world now faces rapid changes, from technology to climate, global economics, culture, and politics.

At the centre of these transformations, she said, stands the woman: resilient, visionary, and determined to lead.

She stressed that true empowerment must be holistic, embracing education, economic access, digital literacy, confidence, and supportive social frameworks.

In spite of progress, Orok noted that gender disparities still persist in leadership, representation, and opportunity.

“To excel, women must view leadership not as a privilege but as a duty to inspire, innovate, and uplift society,” she said.

She added that women bring empathy, vision, resilience, and emotional intelligence to leadership roles.

“We are not just meant to occupy spaces, but to thrive in them. We must embrace our strength, grow purposefully, and lead authentically,” Orok stated.

President of NIM, Commodore Abimbola Ayuba (rtd), said the institute recognises the struggles women face balancing careers and domestic responsibilities.

Ayuba said the WIMLEAD conference was added to NIM’s annual human capital development calendar to support women’s growth and aspirations.

He noted that globally, women have continually excelled and proved their worth in various fields.

According to him, women now lead in top boardrooms and political positions across the world.

He added that many Nigerian women have also excelled in both management and leadership.

“Sadly, in spite of their efforts, women still face discrimination at senior levels in several professions.

“There remains a strong need to remove the barriers and biases that hinder women from reaching the top of their careers,” he said.

Ayuba said women are not asking for favours but for equal opportunities to compete and excel on merit. (NAN)
