The Alumni Association of the National Institute for Security Studies (AANISS) says it is strengthening inter-agency synergy and leveraging strategic experience to support national efforts in tackling Nigeria’s security challenges.

President of the Association, Mr Mike Ejiofor, said this during the 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the alumni, held at the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), Abuja.

Ejiofor said the association was made up of seasoned professionals from Nigeria’s security and intelligence architecture – including the military, police, DSS, and other regulatory and enforcement bodies.

He noted that alumni of NISS often go on to occupy key leadership roles across agencies, which enhances mutual respect and operational cooperation.

“As an association, we contribute our quota by encouraging synergy among the security agencies. Most of our members are drawn from these institutions, and that helps break inter-agency rivalry,” he said.

“For instance, you could have an SSS director and a police commissioner in the same state, both of whom passed through this institution. That shared background fosters collaboration, not friction,” he said.

Responding to the call by the Director-General of the DSS for alumni to deepen their involvement in national security efforts, Ejiofor affirmed the association’s existing roles in policy formulation and strategic communication.

“We have always contributed in areas like strategic policy support and operational collaboration. The DG’s call is simply a reinforcement of our ongoing role,” he stated.

On the lingering farmer-herder clashes, particularly the recent incident in Yelwata in Benue, Ejiofor said the association was deeply concerned, adding that they were engaging discreetly.

“We discuss such issues thoroughly during our sessions, but solutions are not always meant for the public domain.

“We don’t just need security agencies involved — we need full government engagement to implement real solutions,” he added.

Also speaking, Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim Salihu, Director of Veteran Affairs, Defence Headquarters and a BoT member, emphasised the alumni’s role in policy and strategy development.

Salihu stressed that security remains the foundation for national development, and alumni of the institute are uniquely positioned to bridge institutional gaps and offer long-term solutions.

“As fellows, we come from the highest levels of our respective ministries, departments and agencies. We harness that collective capacity to influence national policies,” Salihu said.

“The DG DSS has rightly identified us as policy shapers. Our mission is to consolidate our experiences and redirect them toward national and continental stability,” he said.

The AANISS AGM brought together high-level security professionals and alumni committed to advancing national cohesion, operational efficiency, and regional peace through collaboration and thought leadership. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
