Art enthusiasts have urged parents to encourage children to pursue creative arts for a self-reliant future.

They made the call on Tuesday during the “Annual Children’s Day Art Exhibition” organised by the National Gallery of Art in Osogbo, Osun State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme, titled ‘Emerging Talents,’ designed for showcasing children’s artwork, was organised in collaboration with the Kunle Buraimoh Foundation.

Mr Jimoh Buraimoh of Heritage Art Gallery, Osogbo, said art had sustained him since 1975 and had taken him to various countries through his works.

“There was a time when, as little children, we were mocked for making mud sculptures. But when we travelled abroad and started earning money from our work, people began bringing their children to learn the craft from us.

“Art can open doors for people. In 2001, I received a grant to train others and as I speak to you now, those I trained back then have their own galleries, are doing well, and are also training others,” he said.

He urged parents to encourage their children who show interest in art to take up the craft, noting that it could be the key to their future wealth and fame.

Mr Soji Oni, an art historian from Binghamton University, New York, said that creative art was a craft that had made many people rich and famous, with their works fetching millions of dollars at auctions.

“Some artists are no longer alive, yet their works are still being sold at very high prices,” he said.

According to him, art has created numerous opportunities for young artists.
He urged parents to allow their children to take up the craft, noting that it could serve as an added advantage alongside their school certificates.

Mr Adodo Adekune, Curator of the National Gallery of Art, Osun, said the art exhibition was aimed at showcasing the exceptional creativity of children.

He noted that the programme brought together artworks that were not just colourful, but also deep reflections of thought, culture and imagination.

According to him, the exhibition is a testament to the fact that children are not merely observing the world, but are already shaping it with colour, texture and emotion.

Afterwards, artworks by some primary and secondary school students were displayed for attendees to view and appreciate. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
