Dr Adebowale Adedokun, Director-General, Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), has highlighted the importance of the bureau and COREN in enforcing standards and ensuring accountability in infrastructure development and procurement practice.

Adedokun said this in a statement issued by Zira Nagga,  Head of Public Relations, BPP in Abuja on Saturday.

During a visit by the leadership of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) to the bureaus’ temporary office, Adedokun commended the critical role engineers play in nation-building.

“COREN and BPP have a joint responsibility to enforce standards and accountability across infrastructure development and procurement practices.

“If engineers across the country work with the same dedication I see from those within this bureau, Nigeria will not be grappling with failed roads and substandard infrastructure,” he said.

Adedokun emphasised the need for engineers to go beyond contracts and transactions to becoming key influencers in policy formulation, project conceptualisation and decision-making processes.

“Engineers must think globally and embrace innovation and technology. We must re-engineer ourselves and support young talent,” he said.

He also expressed the bureau’s commitment to deepening collaboration with COREN to ensure that only registered and qualified engineers are engaged in public procurement and project execution.

Adedokun said that the bureau would decline procurement requests involving unregistered engineers.

Calling for urgent reforms in capacity building, Adedokun said that procurement guidelines and engineering practices must be updated to meet modern demands.

He appealed to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to consider posting engineering graduates to teach in secondary schools.

The BPP boss emphasised the importance of targeted mentorship and internship for engineering graduates in relevant government agencies to enhance their practical skills and contribute to the development of critical sectors of the economy.

He expressed BPP’s willingness to open its doors to young engineering graduates and NYSC corps members for internship.

Prof. Sadiq Abubakar, President and Chairman of COREN, appreciated the bureau for the warm reception, and commended BPP for its efforts towards enhancing transparency and efficiency in public procurement processes.

Abubakar praised the quality of work and setup in the new temporary office of the bureau located at the Bank of Industries (BOI) building, saying it is a testament to effective operational management.

He said that the mandate of COREN expanded beyond engineers to technologists, technicians, craftsmen and artisans.

“COREN is also working on a mutual recognition agreement which has gone up to 90 per cent completion.

“Registration has been going on for the last 40 years in COREN and we are ready to share our database with BPP.”

Abubakar highlighted the historical overview of COREN, emphasising its achievements and roles over the years in agencies such as the Nigeria Maritime Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He noted COREN’s strides in achieving global recognition for the engineering profession in Nigeria.

Both parties agreed to set up a team to drive strategic discussions towards achieving a Memorandum of Understanding. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
