The Development Initiative of West Africa (DIWA) on Wednesday empowered 93 women in Zumba Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDPs) camp in Niger with N50,000 each.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that DIWA is a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving quality of life in West African communities through education, peace building, good governance, among others.
The intervention is the second phase carried out under the Zumba Child Advancement Programme (Z-CHAap) by DIWA in collaboration with the North South Power Foundation (NSPF).
In his remarks, Dr Samson Esumeh, a Consultant to the Foundation, said the intervention was designed to empower women with sustainable means of livelihoods.
“This is to help the women, especially as their children who once depended on fetching firewood to survive, have been enrolled back in school,” he said.
He described the intervention as timely, adding that it would not only support the women financially, but secure the future of their children through education.
Also speaking, Musa Mohammed, Project Manager of DIWA, revealed that 100 children were enrolled at Central Primary and Model Primary Schools in Zumba under the first phase of Z-CHAP.
He said that proper monitoring would be carried out across both phase of the programme and urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the funds.
Mohammed emphasised that the long term impact of the project depended on how well the women would manage the resources to create lasting sources of income.
In his remarks, Alhaji Shuiabu Gwada, Director General of the Niger State Small, Medium Enterprises and Microfinance Agency, highlighted the importance of financial literacy and business management to the success of the initiative.
Gwada, who was represented by Madaki Abdullahi, a staff in the agency, enjoined the beneficiaries to invest the money wisely to improve their means of livelihoods.
Also, Alhaji Akilu Isiyaku, Chairman of the Shiroro Local Government, commended the organisers for the support and urged the women to channel the funds into productive ventures that would uplift their families.
One of the beneficiaries, Fatima Mohammed, thanked the organisers for the gesture and promised to make judicious use of the money to support her children’s education.(NAN)
