The Executive Director, Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC), Dr Abdulmumin Aminu-Zaria, says the Marketplace project of Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) is a hub of development and transformation of lives of Nigerians.
In a statement, Fatima Yusuf, NIWRMC Head of Press and Public Relations, on Tuesday in Abuja, disclosed that Aminu-Zaria said this at the ACReSAL Market Place Project with the theme ‘’Greening the Environment, Saving Lives’’.
It was a stakeholders engagement programme that brought together World Bank, Federal Ministries of Water Resources and Sanitation, Agriculture and Food Security, Environment and other relevant stakeholders.
Aminu-Zaria said: “The Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission has had the distinct privilege of receiving invaluable support from the ACReSAL project, which has made a profound impact in two key areas of our operations.
‘’First, through the development of 20 Strategic Catchment Management Plans (CMPs) for the five Northern Hydrological Areas of Nigeria. These CMPs serve as essential frameworks for the sustainable management of our water resources, allowing us to address local needs and environmental challenges effectively.
‘’Second, the establishment of a dedicated Hydrological Modelling Centre has greatly enhanced our analytical capabilities. This centre allows us to simulate various hydrological scenarios, which is crucial for informed decision-making in resource allocation, flood management and drought mitigation strategies.
‘’Together, these initiatives have significantly bolstered our institutional capacity to implement Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) practices,” he said.
He added that the partnership between NIWRMC and ACReSAL has improved water governance across the region, fostering collaboration among stakeholders and promoting sustainable development within its catchment areas.
Aminu-Zaria said that through these efforts, the commission was paving the way for a more resilient water management system that would ensure equitable access to water resources and preserve the environment for future generations.
“The Commission deeply values this partnership with ACReSAL and recognises the project’s critical role in advancing Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), climate adaptation and livelihood improvement.
‘’As we continue to collaborate, we remain committed to ensuring that these interventions translate into sustainable benefits for the environment and the people of Nigeria.”(NAN)
