The Challenge Initiative (TCI), an NGO, has urged the Adamawa Government to sustain the gains of family planning (FP) interventions that attracted 29,000 new users between January 2023 and June 2025.

Dr Taiwo Johnson, TCI Chief of Party, made the call at a stakeholders’ meeting on sustaining FP interventions on Thursday in Yola.

The meeting had the theme “Transitioning Adamawa State to Self-Reliance in Family Planning.”

Johnson, represented by TCI Senior Executive, Dr Dorcas Akila, commended the successes recorded and appealed to the government to sustain the programme as it gradually winds down in the state.

She explained that TCI introduced the initiative in 22 states nationwide, including Adamawa, and congratulated the state for emerging as one of the top performers.

She noted that over 1.7 million people had been initiated into adopting FP strategies for healthier family lives.

According to her, the three-year partnership with the Adamawa Government was designed to achieve self-reliance by scaling up FP.

“In achieving self-reliance, we urge the government to independently plan, finance, implement and sustain FP programmes without depending on external donors and partners.

“Political commitment must be demonstrated through policy implementation, accountability, advocacy and coordination.

“Financial commitment is also needed to establish and monitor budget allocations and releases for demand creation, commodities and services,” he said.

Johnson disclosed that TCI committed N93.4 million to the programme, while the Adamawa Government provided FP commodities worth N28 million in 2024.

She said that during the transition phase, TCI would continue to collaborate with the state to sustain demand generation, service delivery and robust data management.

Dr Suleiman Bashir, Executive Chairman of the Adamawa Primary Healthcare Development Agency, commended TCI, describing the partnership as a unique opportunity that strengthened FP service delivery in the state.

“Through this collaboration, we have made tremendous progress, reaching over 600,000 people through various innovations.

“We look forward to sustaining every component of the programme as a responsive and responsible government,” Bashir said.

Also speaking, Mrs Aisha Abubakar, FP Focal Person at the State Ministry of Health, said 30 health facilities across nine LGAs, including Yola North, Gombi, Fufore, Michika, Demsa and Maiha, benefitted from the programme.

She explained that before the intervention in 2022, the state recorded 47,980 FP acceptors, however 69, 094 additional clients were recorded since its implementation.

Similarly, the District Head of Girei, Dr Ahmad Musdafa, represented by Malam Sanusi Yahaya, lauded  TCI for sensitising rural communities on the safety and reliability of FP services.

“This awareness is helping to improve family health, the economy and overall wellbeing, leading to greater acceptance of FP commodities in our communities,” Musdafa said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was organised by TCI in collaboration with Development Communications Network (DevComs) and brought together stakeholders from the health sector, media, and traditional and religious institutions.

NAN also reports that TCI recognised and decorated FP champions, including religious and traditional leaders, for their contributions to the success of the interventions. (NAN)
