Mrs Bolaji Dada, the Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), has called for collective efforts to empower and provide humanitarian support to vulnerable people in society.

Dada made the call on Tuesday at a programme organised by the ministry to celebrate the 2025 World Humanitarian Day (WHD) in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that WHD is commemorated every Aug. 19 globally to increase public awareness about humanitarian activities and the importance of international cooperation.

The theme of the 2025 WHD is “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities.”

Dada emphasised the need to empower local actors in communities, as a way of ensuring that humanitarian responses are sustained and tailored to the unique needs of the people.

The commissioner said that over the years, the ministry had empowered women, youth and persons with disabilities through vocational and entrepreneurial skills, provided legal and counselling support to victims of domestic and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

She added that “though we are marking the WHD today, which falls on Aug. 19, the spirit and essence remain the same as a day to honour the selfless men and women who dedicate their time, energy and compassion to improving the lives of others.

“This event serves as a reminder that humanitarian work is not confined to those who wear official titles or badges.

“Every act of kindness, no matter how small, strengthens the fabric of our communities. At WAPA, our mandate goes beyond advocacy; it is anchored on empowerment, protection and inclusion.

“We are deeply committed to uplifting the most vulnerable members of society and ensuring no one is left behind.

“Through our various empowerment programmes, we have continued to equip women, youths and vulnerable persons with skills at our various acquisition centres to enhance livelihood, promote self-reliance, economic independence and dignity.”

Dada commended Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his support to the ministry, saying that the various interventions reflected the humanitarian essence of giving hope and creating pathways to sustainable livelihoods for Lagos residents.

She assured that WAPA would continue to collaborate with women-focused NGOs, civil society groups and the media to make lasting difference in communities.

NAN reports that the event started with a walk led by the commissioner from ShopRite Ikeja to the Lagos State House of Assembly, terminated at WAPA office.(NAN)
