The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Thursday inspected the ongoing construction of some police stations, pledging its commitment to their timely completion.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the inspection of the projects was carried out by the Director of FCT Security Services Development, Adamu Gwary.
Gwary, after conducting newsmen round the projects, said that 11 out of the 12 police stations across the six area councils in the FCT were nearing completion.
He said that the projects were conceived after the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike’s town hall meeting with stakeholders in 2023.
“After approval by the FCT Executive Committee, construction began in September 2024.
“The initiative aims to bring security closer to residents and tackle rising kidnappings and other crimes,” he said.
The director stated that each of the police stations would have officers’ quarters, consisting of six two-bedroom flats, to accommodate the personnel.
According to him, the stations will serve as a morale booster to FCT residents, particularly in rural areas, thus aligning with Wike’s vision to restore confidence in the security system.
He said: “The new police stations in rural areas will undoubtedly boost residents’ morale and confidence, aligning with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike’s vision of strengthening the security system.
“These facilities will bring security closer to the people. With personnel stationed nearby, response times will improve and police can effectively handle situations.
“Currently, 11 out of the 12 police stations have reached over 90 per cent structural completion, with one yet to commence.
“Fitting works are also progressing, with many stations having virtually completed this phase. Overall, the projects are over 90 per cent complete,” Gwary said.
NAN reports that some of the police station construction sites visited included: Bako and Giri in Gwagwalada Area Council; Yaba in Abaji Area Council; Ushafa in Bwari Area Council and Saburi and Takushara in Abuja Municipal Area Council.
One of the contractors at Saburi site, Ahmed Yahaya, who spoke with newsmen, pledged his commitment to delivering the project within the time frame. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
