Sri Lanka will recruit women for key railway positions, including engine driver, railway superintendent, station master, and railway supervisory manager, for the first time in the history of the Railway Department, the Government Information Department said Tuesday.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved the move to promote gender inclusivity and broaden employment opportunities for women within the country’s railway sector, the statement added.
Since its establishment in 1858, the Sri Lanka Railway Department had appointed only men to those posts, making the new policy a historic milestone.
