The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has hailed the decision of a High Court in Gauteng, Johannesburg, which prohibited an anti-migrant group, Operation Dudula, from unlawful activities against foreign nationals.
The union in a statement issued by its Secretary, Akindele Olunloyo, and President, Smart Nwobi, described the ruling as a significant victory for the rights and dignity of migrants in South Africa.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the court had on Tuesday prohibited the group from blocking foreign nationals’ access to schools, healthcare services, intimidation, harassment, and assault.
The suit was filed by a coalition of civil society organisations in the country under the aegis of Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia (KAAX).
“This ruling affirms the constitutional protections afforded to all residents in South Africa, regardless of nationality, and underscores the principle that human dignity has no nationality.
“For the Nigerian community, which constitutes one of the largest and most vibrant migrant groups in South Africa, estimated at over 50,000 strong, this victory is a beacon of hope and a safeguard against xenophobic violence and discrimination,” NUSA said.
The union further said that the court’s interdiction of Operation Dudula’s actions reinforced South Africa’s constitutional commitment to equality, non-discrimination, and access to essential services such as healthcare and education.
It also called on the South African government to uphold its duty to protect all residents and to implement its National Action Plan to Combat Racism, Xenophobia, and Related Intolerance.
“The Nigerian Union South Africa reaffirms its commitment to fostering unity, resilience, and solidarity among all marginalised communities in South Africa.
“We recognise that the fight against xenophobia is a collective struggle that requires cooperation across all sectors of society,” it added.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
