The Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE) on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to upholding professional ethics and ensuring fair remuneration for its members nationwide.

Dr Dominic Udoatan, National President and Chairman in Council of NATE, stated this during the association’s 41st Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Conference of Technologists in Engineering (CONFOTECH) held in Lagos.

The conference was held with the theme ‘Enhancing Professionalism in Engineering Enforcement and Remuneration for Sustainable National Growth’.

The annual gathering focused on strengthening professional practice, promoting ethical compliance, and encouraging continuous self-development among members to drive national technological advancement.

Udoatan urged technologists to register with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) to ensure proper regulation and eliminate quackery in the profession.

According to him, the new COREN leadership under Prof Sadiq Abubakar has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards quackery and unethical practices.

“The new leadership of COREN has zero tolerance for quackery and unprofessional conduct. Our members must act responsibly and do what is right at all times.

“NATE members should also pursue continuous professional development to remain current and relevant in the dynamic engineering environment,” Udoatan said.

He appealed to the Federal Government to abolish the dichotomy between Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelor’s degree (BSc) holders to promote fairness and national progress.

“Removing the HND and BSc divide will enhance equity, motivate young professionals, and inspire innovation within the engineering field.

“Our aspiring technologists must uphold integrity, avoid cutting corners, and combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills,” he said.

Commenting on COREN’s proposed residency programme for engineers, Udoatan described it as a welcome initiative that would strengthen the professional framework of engineering technologists.

“The residency programme will place HND and BSc holders on equal footing at entry level, allowing both to advance in their respective career paths.

“It will also ensure career progression for technologists up to level 17 in the civil service, similar to their engineering counterparts.

“I believe addressing all disparities will transform the engineering sector and promote sustainable national development,” Udoatan said.

The event attracted dignitaries including Dr Ibraheem Abdul, Rector of Yaba College of Technology, and Oba Sulaiman Bamigbade, the Olofin Adimula of Isheri in Lagos.

Also present were Mrs Aramide Adeyoye, Chairperson of COREN, and other stakeholders from across the country. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
