Katsina State Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr Bishir Gambo, has expressed delight over the state’s recognition as Open Defecation Free (ODF) by the Clean Nigeria Campaign Secretariat.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ODF status is given to states or communities where everyone uses safe, hygienic toilets and no one practices open defecation.
NAN reports that the celebration was held during the 2025 World Toilet Day and the 6th anniversary of the Clean Nigeria Campaign in Abuja.
Gambo, who spoke on the sidelines of the campaign’s 6th anniversary, said the award reflects Gov. Dikko Radda’s commitment to implementing the state’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) policy.
He attributed the achievement to the combined efforts of communities, government, and development partners.
The commissioner stressed sustainability, noting that WASH projects remain functional and benefits are preserved for future generations.
“Every component has been implemented, and today’s recognition is the outcome of that dedication.
“We want to bequeath a strong legacy, and what we have achieved must be maintained,” Gambo added.
He said Katsina previously struggled with open defecation, but the government’s comprehensive WASH policy under the Dikko Agenda now aims to eliminate it across all communities.
Gambo commended WASH coordinators in all local government areas, council chairmen, and the Federal Ministry of Water Resources for their guidance and technical support in achieving ODF status.
The commissioner reaffirmed Katsina’s commitment to sustaining ODF status, maintaining infrastructure, and collaborating with federal authorities and development partners to strengthen sanitation outcomes for communities.(NAN)
