The Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC) and Kano State Water Board (KSWB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen Nigerian’s water governance architecture and ensure sustainable service delivery.

At the event, Dr Abdulmumini Aminu-Zaria, Executive Director of NIWRMC, said collaborations between the Federal and State Governments would stregthen water management in the country.

”This will ensure that water abstraction, ground water development, pollution control and service delivery are managed in a coordinated and sustainable manner which supports the national drive towards Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).

“Our collaboration will also help develop a reliable reporting system, and support the development of strategies that protect both water quantity and quality for present and future generations,” he said.

Aminu-Zaria stated that the NIWRMC has embarked on institutional reset and reform in order to entrench good corporate governance and stakeholders’ engagement in the water sector.

He said that the collaboration with the KSWB was in furtherance of this commitment to sanitise the water sector in Nigeria.

”This reflects a shared commitment to improving water allocation efficiency, enhancing compliance with national water regulations and promoting transparency in Water-Use Licencing.

”This MoU allows us to harmonise our regulatory mandate, streamline data exchange and jointly strengthen monitoring and enforcement mechanism across Kano State water sector,” he said.

The Executive Director commended the leadership of the KSWB for their vision and readiness to embrace regulatory reforms and cooperation.

He added that the implementation of the MoU would set a new benchmark for other states and boost national effort towards sustainable water resources management.

In his response, Haruna Doguwa, Kano State Commissioner of Water Resources, said that the state government prioritises the provision of portable to residents.

Doguwa said that was the reason for the collaboration and cooperation with the NIWRMC to regulate water sources in Kano State.

He added that the MoU would serve as a guiding tool for the state to fully tap its water potential of the residents and businesses in the state.(NAN)
