The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has partnered with Safe Point and Care Initiative (SPCI) to enhance the active participation of women in politics.
Mr Augustine Doma, NOA’s State Director, Nasarawa State, made this known at a sensitisation workshop in Nasarawa for wives of local government chairmen, women leaders and politicians in the state.
The workshop’s theme was “Safe Space, Strong Voices”.
Doma said the theme was apt and needful in uniting the voices of major stakeholders in the state to empower women politically and advance their participation in leadership roles.
He urged the Association of Local Government Chairmen’s Wives, women party leaders and all the participants to join forces in making their dreams come true.
The resource person, Mrs Christiana Abimiku, expressed dismay over the low percentage of women in politics.
According to her, women always take the lead during elections and voting, hence the need to enshrine affirmative action and ensure reserved seats for women in politics.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that wives of 9 out of the 13 local government chairmen in the state were present at the workshop,
Speaking on their behalf, wife of the ALGON Chairman in the state, Mrs Safiyanu Andaha, promised that she and her counterparts would organise a stepdown of the workshop in their different LGAs to include more women.
Also, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Dr Margaret Elayo, in her goodwill message, commended SPCI for the initiative, noting it would elevate women in the state.
Elayo advised the women to take advantage of the workshop and take politics with all seriousness for a better Nigeria.
Dr Amina Omeri, SPCI Founder, thanked participants for responding to the invitation and urged them to utilise the golden opportunity presented by the Special Seats Bill already being deliberated at the National Assembly to advance in leadership roles. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
