Lagos Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, has praised the 2025 Governor’s Quiz Competition for inspiring young minds, promoting knowledge, and strengthening critical thinking among students across the state.
Alli-Balogun made the remark during his address at the Year 2025 edition of the annual event, tagged, ‘Brighter Rewarding Future (BRF) Quiz Competition which held on Thursday at the Education Resource Centre, Ojodu-Berger.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition brought together talented students to showcase intellectual brilliance, problem-solving skills, and creativity in a stimulating academic environment conducted by seasoned educators.
He said the platform had created an enabling environment where students interacted with peers, educators, and dignitaries, expanding networks, broadening perspectives, and motivating learners to embrace knowledge for personal growth and societal contribution.
“The competition, now a flagship academic programme, challenges students’ reasoning skills, fosters healthy rivalry, and identifies the brightest minds.
“Many participants have recorded remarkable improvements in BECE, WASSCE, and NECO examinations.
“Beyond academics, the event hones critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.
“Students are encouraged to develop curiosity, innovation, and a culture of learning, equipping them to face future educational and professional challenges.
“The Governor’s Quiz enhances the spirit of sportsmanship and teamwork.
“Participants learn to compete with integrity, respect, and camaraderie while striving for excellence in every challenge,” Alli-Balogun stated.
The commissioner, who hinted that plans were underway to improve on rewards for the students, commended the sustainability element of the annual competition introduced under the former Gov. Babatunde Fashola.
According to him, the most important aspect was the priority given to the competition by Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
He noted that the students performed credibly well, reflecting their preparation and dedication.
He added that their commitment was evident in their impressive responses in mathematics, English, and current affairs, highlighting their readiness and enthusiasm.
He described the event as truly wonderful and inspiring.
The Commissioner also applauded educators and parents for their vital support, noting that their guidance motivated students to aim higher, remain focused, and achieve excellence.
He urged the them to continue nurturing children for greater academic and personal growth.
In the Primary School category, Abina Omololu Primary School, Education District IV, scored 14 points to claim first place.
Badagry Junior Grammar School, Education District V, also scored 14 points and emerged winners in the Junior category.
In the Senior Secondary category, Iba Housing Estate Senior High, Education District V, scored 14 points to claim the championship.
The highlight of the day was the Best Mathematician category, which was keenly contested, with Oluremi Joseph from Bolande Senior Grammar School, District VI, emerging as the winner.
Winners of the competition received prizes including tablets, school bags, stationery, trophies, and other gift items.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
