In the yuletide spirit, the Lafiaji Development Association (LDA), a non-governmental organisation(NGO), on Sunday distributed food items to 600 beneficiaries across the five zones in the Lafiaji area of Lagos.
The Founder of the NGO, Mr Florentino Sanya, spoke during the distribution held at the Lafiaji Community Centre on Lagos Island, where beneficiaries gathered for the yuletide outreach.
He said the items were distributed to support vulnerable residents of the area amid the current economic challenges.
Sanya said the beneficiaries were selected from the five zones under Lafiaji, which include Oke Suna, Sango-Simpson, Araromi, Obalende and Ije.
According to him, the food items distributed included rice, condiments, groundnut oil and beverages.
He noted that the food donation was also a way of giving back to the communities where all members of the NGO were born and raised.
“Those of us who have our roots in this part of Lagos came together to form this association in order to give back to our society.
“This year, we are here again to assist vulnerable people in our locality by supporting them with food items, and this has always been the tradition of LDA,” he said.
Also speaking, the President of LDA, Mr Adekunle Gonzalo, said the NGO started the food distribution initiative in 2024 to support vulnerable individuals, especially the aged.
Gonzalo noted that prior to the commencement of the food distribution in 2024, the association had supported the five communities through medical outreach programmes, empowerment schemes and educational sponsorships, among others.
“Christmas is a season of giving and that is why we are here to give back to our people,” he said.
He added that plans were underway to increase the food distribution from once a year to twice yearly.
The NGO’s Project Coordinator, Mr Bernard Sanya, said in his remarks that the association would continue to intensify efforts to support vulnerable people in Lafiaji through various interventions.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the beneficiaries jointly praised the NGO for its gesture and commitment to giving back to the community. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
